* Do you know what a Smurf DDoS attack is?

Suggested article: What is a Smurf DDoS attack?

The Smurf attack is a type of Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack. It got its name from the Smurf malware used to run it. Its goal is to take down computer networks to make their resources unavailable to legitimate users. It makes use of a flaw in the Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP).

We divide DDoS Smurf attacks into two types. The Basic entails flooding a network with ping packets containing a faked IP address for the victim. The Advanced has a similar appearance. It can spoof the IP addresses of packets so that the response can be sent to many targets.

There are actions that you can execute to prevent or mitigate a Smurf DDoS attack:

  1. Get a DDoS protection solution for your servers.
  2. Monitoring your traffic in detail to detect unusual traffic loads and spikes and checking the volume and signature of data packets is critical to preventing an event.
  3. Keep an eye on bandwidth usage. Atypically fast consumption, for example, could indicate a Smurf DDoS attack attempt.
  4. To distribute traffic, obtain redundancy and a load balancing solution. Large loads will not pose a threat if they are routed to different servers.

This is a small part of the types of actions you can take. If you want to learn more about it, you can check the following page about Smurf DDoS attacks.
